When I sit back and watch the commoditization of Black culture explode onto the World’s stage, I am both filled with pride and dread. As a Jamaican, it’s somewhat complimentary to hear people speak of Bob Marley. But sometimes this feeling of pride is quickly turned to something akin to panic or frustration as my island is reduced to a weed spot on the corner of the World. It’s more than I can take sometimes.
As an observer of different cultures, being an immigrant in this country, I see the same thing happening with Black, Asian, and Mexican cultures. We are reduced to our lowest denominators with or without our permission. But when it is with our permission the slight paid to us by others seems to be warranted in their minds.
