It was 2009 when I first began listening to Nicki Minaj. She fascinated me as we hadn’t had a mainstream female MC in years. I was in love with Lauren Hills’ music and vibe, overdosed on Lil Kim, dug Foxy Brown, and was infatuated with Missy’s style and lyrics. Left Eye was a part of TLC, but she was also one of my faves. But it had been a long while since I had a woman’s voice coming out of my speakers, much less one I really loved.
The two things that we all gravitate towards in a MC is her stylish and confident. It makes a girl, young woman, or any female fan feel that much more confident in their life while listening to a verbose MC knowing that she’s just as good, if not, better than her male counterpart.
When Nicki came on the scene I had a great feeling about the future of female Hip Hop. She energized it again and my passion for music emerged from whence it slept. Truth is, it had gotten boring with all the one hit wonders in the rap industry. Nicki was a part of Dirty Money, but then was signed by Lil Wayne, and became the queen of Y.M.C.M.B.
In 2009 she released her hit Mixtape Beam Me up Scotty, and on the track Itty Bitty Piggy she promised us wild costumes and fun lyrics.
