There are conflicting reports from the police and witnesses at the scene, however, and with today’s climate, this is very understandable. People want the cops to be wrong, and the police would like us all to believe that every Black man is armed and dangerous. Detective Meghan Aguilar told KTLA, “When he saw the officers, he approached them and an officer-involved shooting occurred.” What he didn’t say was that they saw a knife, verifying their suspicions and confirming that they were truly in danger.
A street performer, a bucket drummer, said that the man put his hands in his pockets when officer “ran up on him,” drew their guns and killed him. He went on to say, “I don’t know what he had but I can say that when they told him to get down and comply, he did not at all. He had his hands outside of his pockets. When they ran up on him, he went inside of his pockets and struck both hands inside of his pockets,” Bruce Cherry told reporters. “That’s when they pulled out on him, that’s when the shots rang out.”
Let’s not forget why the cops were on the scene in the first place. They were there because someone alleged that there was a man assaulting a person with a knife. But when they got to Hollywood and Highland, there was no one assaulted, and there is not clear evidence that there was a knife welding maniac. However, the associate of the man who was shot explained that the shooting victim was named Cody, and he “liked to wave a knife to scare tourists.” Undoubtedly a dangerous part of his shtick.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.
The cops said that they found a combination knife, something similar to a Swiss Army knife at the scene. Hardly illegal as it is not over the lawful 4.5 inches. There is more to come from this as the media, and especially social media, has gotten a hold of it. Watch the video I found on Facebook of the shooting. Hear the screams of “hands up, don’t shoot” over the din of police and emergency workers. It’s unsettling to see a man dead on the ground while still being handcuffed. Be advised that it isn’t pretty. But it is the World we live in now.
